The Abysswalker

The Tragedy of Knight Artorias

6 min read2025-04-05

Of all the Knights of Gwyn, none were as brave as Artorias. His tale is not one of victory, but of a noble soul consumed by the very darkness he sought to destroy.

The Four Knights of Gwyn

Artorias was one of the four elite knights who served Lord Gwyn, alongside Ornstein the Dragonslayer, Gough the Hawkeye, and Ciaran the Lord's Blade. Known for his unbending will of steel, Artorias possessed a unique ability: he could traverse the Abyss, the creeping darkness that threatened to swallow the world.

The Mission to Oolacile

When the Abyss began to consume the land of Oolacile, awakened by the sorcerers who disturbed the grave of Primeval Man, Artorias was sent to stop it. He took with him his companion, the Great Grey Wolf Sif.

But the Abyss was not an enemy that could be fought with a sword alone. It was a corruption of nature itself. Deep within the Chasm of the Abyss, Artorias faced Manus, the Father of the Abyss.

The Sacrifice

Overwhelmed and broken, his arm shattered, Artorias made his final choice. He did not use his great shield to protect himself. Instead, he used his magic to cast a protective barrier around his companion, Sif, saving the wolf at the cost of his own sanity.

When the Chosen Undead finds Artorias centuries later, he is no longer the noble knight. He is a husk, dripping with the black sludge of the Abyss, mindlessly slaughtering anyone who dares enter Oolacile. We do not fight Artorias to defeat a villain; we fight him to grant a hero the peace he earned long ago.
